I found this picture and the article surrounding it about 6 months ago. I had been working for my LGBT group at my school, and I wanted to do some research into the rumor I had heard that "The Bible doesn't only define marriage between a man and a woman exclusively". What I found was completely reprehensible, yet necessary to understand this issue. After finding out that there are realistically eight composite definitions of marriage inside of the Bible, it made me realize something crucial about the way we as a nation have defended the institution of homophobic marriage. The main reason why we haven't had the momentous shift in gay rights that we should have had as a developed nation is because we have called sanctuary on religious christian doctrine. We have used the old "This goes against my religion so I cannot stand for it." method of oppressing gays since we have recorded that struggle. After doing some further research, not only did I find that all of these citations were accurate, but further prolific than I had originally thought. Realizing that the people who claim to go against gay marriage also are the ones claiming that they study the bible (for lack of a better word) religiously, I have come to the conclusion that people against gay marriage are either extremely ignorant to the text that they have been reading, or are maliciously using the fact that no secular person is going to waste time digging around the bible to try and prove them wrong. This needs to be an integral change in the way we approach this issue.
